All Things Cornish

Good Afternoon everyone, and welcome back!

Now, I am fully aware that I’ve been neglecting my blog in recent months. I’ve just been sooo busy! I always have these great intentions to update and waffle mindlessly about how life is going, but then it just gets in the way or I can’t be arsed so… Here I am!  This year has definitely been the fastest and busiest year of my life. Its been absolutely chockful of stuff to keep us busy; it genuinely feels like it was only a few months ago that I was starting my blogging journey and BOOM! Autumn. Not that I’m complaining that my favourite season has arrived, but the year has literally FLOWN!

Anyway, for this blog post I am going to cast myself back into the height of summer and our Cornish jollyday! I hadn’t been to Cornwall for years and years, and my goodness, it has only grown more beautiful than ever. We booked it during those long days where winter is taking its time coming to an end and you’re just begging for tiny slice of sunshine. I booked it through a great company called Aspect Holidays; they deal in all places Cornish and have a range of properties on offer to suit all budgets, including some last minute deals. We chose Spindrift View in Newquay as it was a stones throw to the famous Fistral Beach, close enough to the town for amenities but also far enough away as not to be swept up in the Boardmasters frenzy!

I won’t bore you with every single thing we did during our amazing visit, but I have compiled a medium sized list below of things that I’d definitely recommend for you to do if you’re ever in the area!

  1. Surfing – Who can go to Cornwall and not have a good old bash at surfing?! Me and Kris certainly never had and I’m so glad that we did! I booked our 3-hour morning lesson with Quiksilver Surf School whilst I was feeling particularly brave. I was actually terrified until the moment in stepped foot into the sea and then BAM! I just got so immersed in not only the lesson, but the experience that I completely forgot about my fears (ahem, sharks). And it was knackering! You do spend more time in the water than you do on the board, but when you finally get it right, it feels so good! Or so Kris tells me (show-off!). The tutors fill you in on all of the safety points, how to handle your board, techniques, etc and then they just allow you to be free in the waves. They’re never far, so if you need help or advice you, they are straight over to help. The whole experience is exhilarating. We’ve already said that we plan to do it again next year, but we’ll just hire the wetsuits and boards this time, now we know the basics.
  2. Cornish Pasties – This doesn’t need introduction nor explanation, but if you’re in Cornwall then you’ve got to have oggy! The same actually goes for Cornish cider. Tom Thumb’s in Newquay town centre has great vibe and selection of beers/ciders.
  3. Golitha Falls – This is actually a pitstop we made en route to Cornwall. Its just off Bodmin and is well worth a visit. You just follow the falls until you reach the waterfall!
  4. Jamaica Inn – I’ve always wanted to come here ever since my Grandad John used to tell me ghost stories of Bodmin Moors, and I got even more intrigued when Most Haunted went there. Its got great views over the moors on a clear day, but it is very commercialised now… But the breakfast is great!
  5. St Ives – Sooooo worth the visit! Its such a stunning harbour town, all iggildy piggildy streets with a whole host of shops, cute bars and restaurants, and an azure blue view. Oh, and a very high chance of spotting seals up close. They are so inquisitive and cheeky. Its breathtaking! My only advice is, do not drive into the town. Go to the Park & Ride and travel in. Its a nice experience on the train too, and you get to see more scenery that you wouldn’t see when you’re driving. The trains do get rammed though, so go early! For excellent cocktails try The Rum & Crab Shack!
  6. The Stable, Fistral Beach – We didn’t have a bad meal in Cornwall. Honest! However, The Stable at Fistral Beach definitely one of our absolute favourites. It was dinner on our first night after a day of doing all things Cornish, and it was our last meal because we couldn’t bear to go home and not have the King Crabber pizza again. Its delicious! ❤ Fresh chilli crab with a drizzle of garlic aioli… *dribbles* You need to try it! They also do a cider tasting board, which is fantastic. They are home to about 50 odd ciders, so the barman picks 5, 1/3 pints for you to try. They come with a little card advising you of the name, strength, and flavour (just in case you need a pint after it!). Its such good fun to try them all in such a wonderful casual, cosy bar with a great view of the sunset over Fistral Beach. Thank me later 😉
  7. St Michael’s Mount – Well worth a visit! You can get to the island via boat or when the tide is low, you can walk across. A majestic castle set amoungst beautiful gardens and views on all sides. You can walk all the way to the top for the history and the views, and then walk all the way down, past the Giant’s Heart, and have story time on the lawns. Mainly for kids, but I enjoyed them immensely! It’s a National Trust site, so check their website and you may get free entry.
  8. And finally, the sunset – make sure you make time on an evening to watch the sunset. They are by far, some of the most beautiful I have EVER seen. Get yourself some Cornish cider, a BBQ, make some smores’ and just watch that sunset. You won’t regret it… Absolute bliss.

So that’s it! My little list of things you must experience whilst visiting Cornwall. I felt so sad to come home! My Mom said that I take after my Dad, she said “You’re your Father’s daughter darling, he’s always adored Cornwall so I guess a tiny piece was in your heart already.” God, when she said that I nearly burst into tears! But it was lovely to come home and talk all about it to my Dad; who is already considering a trip next year! I definitely left a bit of my heart in Cornwall, and I can’t wait to go and experience even more of what it has to offer. It was one of thee best weeks! We fitted so much in and still managed to feel relaxed (obviously all that cider!). We explored, we ate and drank, and we watched the sunsets. What else can a girl ask for? ❤

I will pop a few links below for the places that I’ve mentioned, not of these are affiliate links, we just really loved these places!

Love,
